The railway was incepted by the British in the 19th century with the main purpose of transporting goods, mainly the tea from the plantations and the imported goods to the up country.
Many historically, traditionally, politically, socially and agriculturally significant designations are winded across or close to the tracks of the railway and passengers are able to witness many breath-taking sights from their 290 kilometer journey to Badulla.

This railway line is one of the most fascinating and superb engineering feats of the world. This train would wind its way through 46 tunnels, and it’s certainly one of the best ways to view the magnificent waterfalls, tea plantations and typical life of rural Sri Lanka.
- A Journey of Romance (Viceroy Special Vintage Steam Train – Day Tour) [Only group bookings are accepted ]
The "Viceroy Special" is a 75 year old private train and the only steam train still in operation in Sri Lanka. The train has two air-conditioned observation saloons furnished in period style, with 64 plush reclining seats and individual adjustable tables. A public address system is available for guides to describe details of the journey or for suitable music to be broadcast. Each saloon has an adjoining smokers' lounge and a modern toilet.
